Aloha Hawaii Local Section Members,

Neil Yamamoto recently sent this
information in an e-mail to his ASSE membership (which includes me), and since
imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I would like to do the same for our
group.

As you have probably heard over the past week, Hawaii's 25th
Legislature
is proposing House Bill 1260, in which Part III would repeal
Chapter 396
H.R.S. This chapter pertains to HIOSH and if this is
passed, HIOSH would
no longer exist and Hawaii would no longer have a state
plan, but revert
to Federal OSHA.

I've attached the link that
Neil provided, which will direct you to the actual bill for your
review. As a safety and health professional in Hawaii, this bill will
directly impact you and your employer. Please review the bill and let me
know if you are in
support of, or against the proposed bill. Some of
you have already written to me about this bill.

I know the HI-AIHA Executive Committee wants to represent the
interests of our
members. We would like to know where you stand on
this important issue. Please provide your comments to me at this e-mail
address by 12 noon on Thursday, April 16, 2009.

Ms. Shelly Wheeling-Park
(currently an AIHA Board Member) has contacted Aaron Trippler,
AIHA's Governmental Affairs representative, on our behalf. I will
forward any information I learn from Mr. Trippler. A recent communication
from Aaron indicates that over the past few years some states have made the move
from a state plan to the federal, and others have chosen to change from a
federally-run OSHA to a state plan. It depends on the local political and
financial climate, among other influencing factors.
